What Is Hash Marijuana?

MarijuanaContradictory to popular belief, medical Marijuana hash is not the same as the plant used for recreational purposes. The difference between the two is that one has been nurtured and grown to have greater medical benefits while the other is grown purely to provide a greater feeling of euphoria or a high.

Unlike traditional Marijuana, a hash is also not used in its natural form but is rather an extract, usually in the form of an oil, from the Marijuana plant. A process of filtering and evaporation is used to produce the extract which presents as a thick, dark, resinous substance.

Up until the 70’s, hash oils were mainly produced for recreational use and therefore had a higher percentage of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the active ingredient responsible for its psychoactive properties and does not have great medicinal value. At this time, hash contained anywhere between 10% and 30% of THC, depending on the cutting process or solution used in presenting the extract for use.

Medical Benefits of Hash Marijuana

As studies into the medicinal value of medical marijuana hash increased, CBD (cannabidiol) was identified as the active ingredient that provided medical benefits without the psychoactive properties associated with the drug. Medical benefits include:

  • anxiety and depressionPain relief without the sedation or euphoric side effects of many other types of painkillers.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties to reduce swelling and inflammation in the body.
  • Anti-psychotic or neuro-protective benefits.
  • Anti-oxidant reducing the amount of toxins in the body.
  • Anti-cancer or tumor properties which reduce and combats the presence of cancer cells and tumors in the body.
  • Anti-depressant benefits to treat both anxiety and depression in mental health patients.

As a result of the medical research into CBD, plants started being grown to increase the presence of this cannabidiol and decrease the percentage of THC. In fact, research has shown that CBD reduces the psychoactive action of hash.

Although Hash can be smoked and orally consumed for absorption of CBD, it is also commonly vaporized or used as a topical treatment (applied directly to the skin) as a delivery system. Different delivery systems are more or less suitable to treat differing medical conditions.

Today, the percentage of THC in medical marijuana hash can be as small as 1% or 2% while the CBD value can be as high as 60%. It is best to consult with a medical professional in prescribing hash oil as a treatment to ensure that the medical benefits and not the psychoactive elements are featured in a specific type of marijuana hash.
