How Does A Vaporizer Work?

smoking cannabisIn the recent years, vaporization has emerged as a healthy alternative to smoking cannabis. It is not only a more healthy and efficient way to consume cannabis, but it also helps in saving money over the long term. This is the reason that vaporizers have been increasing in popularity over the past few years.

How Does a Vaporizer Work?

A vaporizer works by slowly and steadily heating up plants material, herbs, oil, wax or concentrates to a temperature below the combustion point. It does not burn the material. Instead, a vaporizer just heats up the material to a level where the beneficial compounds can be easily extracted.

A vaporizer heats the material to a temperate ranging from 350 – 400°F. Heating to this temperature removes the active compounds in the form of vapor. This vapor can be inhaled by the user to benefit from the active compounds in the cannabis.

There are many different types of vaporizers available on the market at a variety of price points. Here is a list of some of the major types of vaporizer units available in the market these days.

A vaporizer can be classified in a variety of different ways. One of the classifications is based on the manner in which the active ingredients are extracted.

Type of Heating Method

One of the types is conduction where the plant material comes directly in contact with the element that is being heated up. This is also known as direct heating as the material is placed directly on a surface that has the heating element directly below. The biggest disadvantage of this heating method is that it results in burnt flavor as the plant matter comes directly in contact with the heat source.

The more traditional method is convectional method of heating. It is an indirect method of vaporizing as the plant matter, or other products do not come in direct contact with the heat source. Instead, hot air helps in vaporizing the material and extracting the useful compounds. Consistent distribution of heat results in more effective vaporization.

Types of Vaporizers

There are three types of vaporizers including portable vaporizers, standard vaporizers and forced air vaporizers.

1. Portable Vaporizers

vape pensAs the name suggests, these are small in size and portable which means you can carry these with you. These are available in various styles including a vape pen as well as a handheld vaporizer.

As far as vape pens are concerned, a user can use dried herbs, oil, waxes and concentrates depending on the quality of the vaporizer. However, it is important to keep in mind that these pens are best suited for concentrates and oils, and these are not exactly meant for dried herbs.

The vape pens need to be cleaned on a periodic basis, and all the devices are not capable of heating all types of ingredients.

The handheld vaporizer costs a bit more than the vape pen but offers more functionality. These can vaporize dried herbs and offer a lot more control over temperature. Some high-end models also come with digital displays and more room for the herb. These are available in a variety of designs.

2. Forced-Air Vaporizers

Also known as desktop vaporizers, these are highly powerful and performance oriented vaporizers. In this method of vaporization, hot air is forced through the herbs to extract the useful compounds. For inhalation, tubing and a balloon system are used. Some of the high-end models also come with digital temperature control that offers greater control to the user.

The biggest advantage of these types of vaporizers is that these offer a large range of temperature to the user. However, these are heavy and take up a lot of space, but nothing can beat the quality of vapor produced by these types of devices.

3. Standard Vaporizers

These have the largest market share. The design is simple and accessible that makes it easy for home use. The vapor is controlled by the user through tubing or whip system. Breath control is used for regulating the intensity and amount of air that is that is pulled over the loose leaves for activating the material.

Overall, these are some of the main types of vaporizers available on the market today. As far as choosing a type of device is concerned, it depends on your personal needs, budget as well as your comfort level and the type of products you want to use with the vaporizer.
